Machine translation is on the rise.
For-profit government contractors and aid organizations are increasingly adopting these tools to cut costs.
This costs translators their jobs and is quite literally jeopardizing Afghans’ asylum cases.
The error-riddled translations in Dari, Pashto, and countless other languages have led to rejected asylum claims.
At Respond, we have created jobs for 437 translators and interpreters. Our skilled, trauma-informed human translators have translated and won hundreds of asylum claims.
Our Afghan translators support an average of 11 family members with the income they earn through this work. In the last two months alone, over 200 Afghans were granted asylum after we translated and interpreted their cases.
We urgently need funding to make this work sustainable: protect asylum seekers’ basic right to high-quality translation.
